Includes approximately 68,000 hectares. This
includes areas of the Blue Mountains National Park and a large
section of Kanangra-Boyd National Park.
The Kanangra-Boyd Wilderness Area boasts
a large scenic water catchment area, providing opportunities
for solitude and unsophisticated, self-reliant recreation.
Within Kanangra-Boyd National Park there are
two land units, the elevated, gently undulating Boyd Plateau
and the labyrinth of creeks, rivers, deep gorges and spiny ridges
into which the plateau falls away. The plateau is traversed
by the Kanangra Walls Road and can be accessed either from Oberon
or Jenolan Caves. This road leads to Kanangra Walls, vehicle
based camping at the Boyd River, bushwalking and lookouts on
the rim of the plateau. The area provides a wide range of bushwalking,
from rugged and remote to the three day walks. Those attempting
any of the wilderness walks should be totally self-reliant and
use minimal impact bushwalking practices.
The lookout walk is the easiest and wheelchair
accessible. A pleasant 10 minute stroll along well-formed tracks
leads to the first lookout which overlooks the gorges of Kanangra
Creek and beyond to the high tops of Mt Cloudmaker and the Blue
Mountains escarpment which presents a spectacular vista. The
second lookout overlooks rugged ravines at the head of the gorges
and Kanangra Falls.
From this lookout the
Waterfall Walk leads down into the gully where Kalang Falls
splash into a deep pool. Plateau Walk - the longest walk turns
off before the main lookout and leads into Kanangra Wilderness
and onto the expansive heath-covered Kanangra Tops Plateau with
its magnificent views
